The Tudor Merchants Hall was originally erected in Southampton's St. Michaels Square around 1428, where it housed the Woolen Cloth Hall and Fish Market. Gradually it fell into disrepair and was eventually sold as a delelict structure in 1634 and moved to its current site within the city wall at Westgate Street. It was extensively restored in 1975 by the City Council and is now available today for Public functions and Private Hire. The building is set out on two floors with the upper level comprising the larger space, the lower supporting the facilities for Coats and toilets. A further room is suitable for caterers or support equipment and opens out into the Square. The building is licensed by the Fire Authority for a maximum of 100 people and may be used for fairs, meetings, exhibitions and other public and private gatherings. Freespirit Events Limited secured a Civil Marriage License for the building in October 2003 further extending the use of the building for Marriage Ceremonies and Receptions.
